Book Week 21st – 25th August
Book Week is coming up soon! Each year, schools and public libraries across Australia spend a week celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators.
Book Week Exchange
Book Week Dress Up Parade:
Tuesday 22nd August 9:15am in the Hall.
Students are invited to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. It would be amazing to see as many students as possible participate in the parade, however, please do not feel pressured to spend lots of money on a new costume. Costumes from home can be just as amazing as brand-new costumes from online shops or stores.
Book Fair
Thursday 24th & Friday 25th August
Our school is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair during Book Week. The theme is Hats off to Reading. The Book Fair will be timetabled to run over Thursday 24th & Friday 25th August. All students will have a chance to visit with their class and purchase or order books.
Your child will have the opportunity to explore a huge range of affordable books featuring characters and subjects kids love and want to read about. From newly released books and bestsellers to award-winning titles and perennial favourites. This is also a great way for you to learn about and discuss your child’s interests and every book sold benefits our school, adding resources to our library and classrooms.
School Lunch Project News:
We have hit the ground running in Term 3 with the School Lunch Project. Grade 5/6 students in the Catering PPP have had their first week, last week preparing and cooking for grade 3 and 4 students . The chicken casserole was a great success, and the 5/6 PPP students were very excited and proud to have been a part of it.
This week Lisa and Karen served Tuna Bake on Tuesday. Luke assisted with the serving of bread rolls. We had lots of positive comments about the tuna bake. With the exception of Mr McCall, who doesn’t love a good tuna bake? Wednesday in our cook from scratch day we had a vegetarian dish called Tomato Beans and Cornbread, known last term as Baked Beans. The feedback from the bean dish at other schools last term was the name was off putting and therefore students were more reluctant to try. I think we should brainstorm a new name for this dish and put our suggestions forward to School Food Matters. The recipe is included for those who might want to make it at home.
Parent/Caregiver Survey
As part of the School Lunch Project, children are receiving free cooked lunches on some days each week. To help better understand the benefits and challenges of providing cooked school lunches, researchers from the University of Tasmania are interested in hearing feedback from parents and caregivers in Term 3. You are invited to complete a short survey. Every parent who completes a survey will go in the draw to win a $20 Visa/Mastercard voucher.
We are also conducting discussion groups/interviews with parents and caregivers which will be held at the school, you can express your interest in taking part in the discussion group at the link. Every person who takes part will receive a $50 voucher for participation.
If you would like to participate, please follow this link:
The front page provides info for the survey and discussion groups. Once parents select "consent for myself to participate" the option will appear to choose the survey only. If you choose that option, you can provide the info required to complete the survey and your details won't be retained for the discussion group.
We thank you in advance for your participation!

Father’s Day Stall – August 31st
Are You Making Every School Day Count?
It’s Term 3 already – welcome back for another term!
As we move through the school year, sometimes regular school attendance can be challenging.
It’s important your child keeps up good attendance habits though.
Going to school every day means your child has every chance to learn, and be around their friends and teachers. Every day adds up, to benefit your child now and in the future.
If you’re having trouble getting your child to school, please talk to us. We’ll listen to your situation, and help in any way we can.
If you’re looking for tips on how to create better attendance habits, visit the Anything can happen website.
Lions Eye Health Program
The Lions Eye Health Program is offering Free Vision Screening for children in Grades 1-4. The screening will be conducted by:
The Lions Club of Rocky Cape
on: 6-7 September 2023
Over 80% of what children learn is processed through their eyes. Untreated eye conditions can affect a child’s development. It is estimated 1 in 5 children in Australia have undetected vision problems. Screenings can help identify children who may require further eye review/testing. Members of the Lions Club have been specifically trained to perform 4 vision screening assessments including:
1. Visual Acuity - using a Lea 3m - 15 Line Symbol Chart
2. Colour Vision - using a Quick 6 - Basic Colour Screening Book
3. Depth Perception - using a Stereo Fly Screening Tool
4. Spot Vision Screener - State of the art portable machine designed to screen for Myopia (near sightedness), Hyperopia (far sightedness), Astigmatism (blurred vision), Anisometropia (unequal refractive power), Strabismus (eye misalignment) and Anisocoria (unequal pupil size).
The individual screening takes just a few minutes to perform. There is no physical contact made with the child and no eye drops are administered. Individual reports will sent to parents. If a vision problem is detected, this will be written on the child’s result sheet and you will be encouraged to seek a further eye assessment with an eye health professional.
Chaplain’s Chat
Recently I heard someone say, "Joy is a verb" and I started wondering about what they meant.
In researching I found the following thoughts -
- Accessing joyful feelings may require "rewiring your brain to seek out & express more moments of joy."
- Follow the butterfly - Notice small moments of joy like the butterfly flitting by, tasting a great coffee or in my case chai latte, solving a puzzle - "Wordle" for me, watching waves crashing on the beach, flowers blooming..... There is great list @ https://www.thesimplicityhabit.com/simple-joys-in-life/
- “En-joy yourself”—"Verbalize the little moments of joy in real time. When you express your joy out loud you give yourself permission to feel it"
- Exaggerate the elation. Magnify the moment - "Dance, sing, express it with more words, look to the sky & say thank you - anything that will help you cherish this moment a little longer"
- Joy is contagious: When you start practising joy, you are encouraging other people in your life to en-joy life more.
Quotes are from the article "Joy is a verb, not a noun" (2022) by Assael Romanelli Ph.D.
Some activities students completed with me last term are pictured below.
Chaplain's Thought - Quote comes from an inspiring & beautiful book: "Feeling Grateful" written by Kobi Yamada & illustrated by Charles Santoso
If you think I can help you and your child in some way or you'd like to chat please leave a message at the school office.
