Principal’s Report
The move is on! We hand over Stage 1 of our long-awaited re-development today and I would like to say a big thanks to our students, families and staff for being so helpful and understanding. I would especially like to thank our Educational Facility Attendants and our Teacher Assistants for their amazing coordination and ability to move or dispose of so many objects in a short space of time. In some of the recesses of the school we have found some very old furniture and teaching resources that are a reminder of how far teaching and technology have come over the years (I am looking at you - blackboards, cassette players, carbon copy paper and overhead slide projectors). A letter has been sent out to the school community regarding changes for Term 4 to help facilitate the redevelopment and I thank you in advance for your support. I would also like to congratulate Mead Con for being the successful tenderer for the works.
I would also like to congratulate our students on their continually improving literacy results. It is a pleasure to be leading a committed staff that have the shared goal of helping to make our students the best that they can be in all areas of academic life. Our reading results and improvement in writing is to be especially commended. I strongly believe our approach to structured literacy and evidence-based practices is leading to our success and I know that the teamwork I am seeing from our staff is a major reason why the changes we have implemented have been so successful.
Improving school attendance is something that we are all committed to, and it needs to be a collaborative approach between school and home. I would ask that unless your child is sick that they attend school. Every day counts!
Courage is one of our school values and, in a school setting, courage can take on many forms. Accepting challenges and embracing opportunities is something that adults in the school have been talking to students about. Outside of school I aware that life can sometimes be very challenging and that lots of courage is needed to continually bounce back. I want to let you know that you are not alone and that there are many ways that the school can support you to keep getting your children to school when times are tough. Please have the courage to reach out for support, we are here for you.
Finally, the AFL Grand Final is tomorrow and I am tipping the Brisbane Lions to beat the Sydney Swans by 9 points. Talking to some our students they are really looking forward to the game and whatever the result please use this as an opportunity to highlight hard work paying off and the importance of setting goals for your children.
I hope you have a safe holiday period,

Redevelopment News
Our Capital Works Redevelopment is finally starting on Monday 30th September, with Mead Con the successful tenderer. Montello Primary staff will be working closely with Mead Con to minimise the disruptions to our students. The letter below recently went home to families and has more details about this exciting news for our community.
Class Snapshot
3/4 Potoroos
Literacy:
At the beginning of Term 3, 3/4 Potoroos were very excited to embrace the 2024 Paris Olympics. Each of us adopted an Australian Olympic Athlete. We learnt about our athlete, followed their sport and what they scored. We even wrote them a letter and sent it in the Australian Post!
HASS:
In HASS this semester we each pulled an Olympic country out of a hat to follow through the Olympics, do some research on and create an information report on PowerPoint. All students did a fantastic job and really enjoyed learning about different countries all around the world! We were able to present our PowerPoints to our class and send it to our families on Seesaw.
Science:
One of the things in Science that we learnt this term was about natural vs manmade materials and landmarks. It was really interesting and were able to use this new knowledge to help us with our Maths project!
Maths:
During Maths this term we have been learning about Area and Perimeter, how to use a Grid Map and Lines of Symmetry. We were able to use our new knowledge to create a floor plan of a new manmade landmark located in our country that we had chosen for HASS. We then used recycled materials to create our landmark and the public area in which it was going to be built. We love doing some hands-on maths! We are yet to finish our projects but watch this space…
Mini Olympics:
During the Olympics we were split into 4 groups and participated in our very own Potoroo Mini Olympics! Our teams were The Stars, The Aussie Womp Womps, The Chambers and The Emeralds. Each day the teams participated in a different activity and practised good sportsmanship and encouraged their teammates - win or lose. During this time, we came up with a team name, designed a team flag, played balloon volleyball, did an egg and spoon race, tennis ball shot put, sack race, hula-hoop pass and a bean bag race. Congratulations to The Chambers on the win!
This term we were very busy!! We can’t wait for all of the amazing learning and fun times in term 4 😊

Kitchen News
Term 3 in the kitchen has been a busy one.
Prep students have been learning about fruit and vegetables and tasting lots of different kinds. I think the fresh pineapple was the favourite.
The Grades 1 and 2 students finished making their play dough and we made some awesome colours.
The Grades 3 and 4 classes made omelettes adding ingredients from our School Garden. The omelettes tasted delicious.
They all learnt how to wash and wipe up their own dishes properly, so they all should be able to do them at home.
All grades made lemonade scones which were enjoyed with a few different types of toppings, jam and cream being the favourite by far!
The PPP students from Grades 5 and 6 have had a productive term. Some of the things we made were pizza scrolls- using the lemonade scone recipe, Tomato, vegetable and chorizo pasta, Double chocolate muffins and even a full breakfast which was a favourite.
Enjoy your holidays.
Lisa.

Chaplain’s Chat
As usual the term has flown by. I have continued to spend a lot of time in classrooms in literacy & maths groups and have enjoyed lots of games both at lunchtime & with students who have earned a break after completing their work. Chess has become quite popular & many students are better at it than me!! Playing chess has many benefits for kids & adults - a topic for another chat!! I've also been doing some craft projects with students including loom knitting - I'd love to borrow some more looms so more students can do this.
Earlier this week I bumped into a carer of one of our Montello students who commented that their child often said, "I'm BORED". Something I'm sure some of you will hear during the holidays. Just last week I read some emails from Alexandra from biglifejournal.com.au discussing the dreaded "I'm BORED". She says, "there's a silver lining to boredom—often, it can spark creativity." When she heard her son say I'm BORED she gave him a bowl and asked him to gather items around the house that started with 'G'. He managed to find a glue stick, a gumball, a glove, and even an empty garbage bag. After about 5 minutes, she set a timer and challenged him to put everything back in one minute. He loved the rush! They continued the game with different letters, and believe it or not, it kept him busy for the next 30 minutes. Then, he found something else to do on his own.
Looking for more ideas to guide your child through their moments of 'boredom?”, check out the Big Life Journal bored post on their facebook page -
You can also sign up at https://biglifejournal.com.au/pages/freebies to get free weekly printables which are carefully designed to help you raise resilient and happy children.
Last week it was great to have 11 students 'Choosing Kind' by joining me in preparing Christmas Boxes to send overseas to children in need. We constructed our boxes, made bracelets & beaded fish, wrote a letter & decorated pencil cases & "stamps" for our boxes. It was great to see students from Gr 3-6 working so well together & to have Mr McCall join us in our session.
We will finish packing our boxes next term with wow items, school items, clothes, hygiene items, toys and NO liquids or second-hand items.
If you would like to contribute items they can be left at the office before Wednesday 23rd October. A list of suggested gifts can be found on the school FB page. If you'd like to pack your own box, contact Sue via the School Office.
I'd like to wish everyone a safe & enjoyable holiday. There are at least 10 students from Montello attending Riverbend camps this holiday & I will again be helping at Camp 1 for Gr 3-5.
If you think I can help you and your child in some way, or you'd like to chat please leave a message at the School Office.
